the dirty dutch! anticlub a notorious collective from eindhoven, the southern capital of holland, was inspired to push itself into a new direction. the inspiration came from a painting by an old lady that drew the attention and gave the impulse to create the album freaks and followers. as the title suggests there are two kinds of people, people who take risks and people who do not. as anticlub used to be a risk-taker but slowly settled in an unwanted comfort zone, this created dissatisfaction and led to a creative standstill. seeing the painting everything became clear again. one should not stand still but keep moving and evolve oneself into new areas that one has not yet explored creatively. as lessismore is from the same dutch city, this state of mind also hit the lessismore label, which inevitable resulted in both parties joining forces to release this diverse album by a former underground techno crew called anticlub. as the lessismore label is known for its typically styled techno, lessismore was searching for a new impulse sound wise and visually, to ensure creative satisfaction in the years to come. with this album everything came together and the lessismore crew reunited to renew their input into the label, which was once founded to be a creative platform and an artistic journey and in retrospective clearly not a platform where one should repeat itself time after time. freaks and followers is an 8 track album with raw electronic based music combined with a variety of vocal work by different new anticlub members. the overall feel of the album is a dark punky attitude that reminds of the good old days of rave, which in the early nineties dominated the dutch club and party scene. this period can be defined as being careless and not taking credibility into account, trying new things, being blunt and just partying your hart out. being older this is a feeling that will never have to die, proved by the old lady whose painting was used as the art-work of the album release.

nice price deal !!! vae victis is back for its 2nd release and is glad to welcome the very first debut of nightjars. with this 4 tracks ep the label shifts on a different musical path, sound and style wise. sound wise, both sides are written, mixed and produced on hardwares and polarized on a ferromagnetic tape. technically, side a (raw side) is mixed with a tough multitrack mixer brought to its saturation limit: the sound is indeed distorted, raw and unfriendly. while the flipside (clean side) is instead mixed with a big class a vintage studio mixer. the sound is brighter, richer of harmonics and the infrasounds are charged thru a wide dynamic range. style wise,the label shifts on a more broken beat field, lets call it bass, dubstep or whatever, but anyway something which should put this vinyl in the records bags of all the lovers of shed, peverelist and horsepower productions to name a few.

mike shannon steps up to the cityfox ltd plate and squeezes the jack juice on his latest offering for cityfox ltd entitled foxology. its a 3 track session of deep jazzy basslines and smooth cuts. we start things off with >foxology feat. flowing<, a twistedly deep smoothy of a house cut with shannons signature shuffle groove and warped dynamic basses featuring some wicked blues harp action from amsterdams flowing. foxologys b-side is home to >foxwell< and >zukunftstrasse<, the former being a rather hot number bubbling with bouncing bass, whereas >zukunftstrasse< is even more laid back and down tempo, while still playing your mind with it’s sonic insight to the distant future.

jean wells story is not an extraordinary one in the world of soul, although her voice certainly was. her biggest hit >have a little mercy< from 1967 was a glorious slice of deep soul, a plea to a lover, whom she is addicted to, but who doesn t seem to notice. her gospel-trained voice perfectly encapsulating those feelings, whilst a stark arrangement dominated by an ethereal organ and dramatic horn stabs heightens the unbearable effect this man is having on jeans life. yet at the time this record only reached number 25 in the r&b charts, just another bit of genius amongst many, thrown out by the black american music industry at one of its most creative and profligate periods.
jean left us with a fantastic recorded legacy, of which her recordings for clyde otis, which are gathered here, are the choicest cuts.

after a couple big releases on the notorious gamm enterprises jazzy jens is now dropping a huge soulful boogie ep on basic fingers. the first cut is a lovely rework of mascaras >see you in la< which features the amazing vocal chords of luther vandross. on the flip we find an uplifting disco/boogie cut that uses elements from our big boy barry white. its truly an amazing feelgood tune that we are hoping will get a big smile on your face. a very hot release by the coolest cat in town … check it out!

here uto karem returns to plus 8 for his second release on the label, with the two tracks he serves up - take control and all over you - continuing in the rising italian stars good run of form. as well as being an in-demand remixer, dj and producer, karem also runs his own agile recordings imprint on which he explores the same deep techno rhythms and loopy hypnotism as he does with his two original tracks here.take control is a liquid track which builds in looped layers through piston pumping percussion, up-right beats and plenty of melodic drama. though it pushes on from left to right in true plus 8 style, the warmth and atmosphere that surrounds the main beats and bass is what really sets the track alight. all over you again features a crisp, almost dry production style as various percussive elements flesh out a 4/4 techno groove. hidden within each bar are some wooden sounding hits and various melodic notes, all of which are heart-warming additions to a killer dancefloor groove. as well as this, there is a more driving dub version of take control which canters on a knife edge for its six minute duration, closing out another efficient and streamlined techno release on plus 8.

with new artist noah pred, the highgrade family adds another exciting voice to the labels musical cosmos. although the canadian producer, dj and founder of his own label thoughtless is already internationally saavy, he recently decided to move to the worlds hub of electronic music and pitch his tent in berlin. included in his luggage: his very own creative perspective, a great sense for aesthetics and an unerring feeling for music, learnt in part, from his many years as a bassist. noahs first ep for berlin label, highgrade records sets an exciting precedent. the track >motive unknown< trickles organically into the aural canals, before the drips become digital drops and the track comes crashing from the speakers in a steady flow. the entire piece is simultaeneously suspended and captivating. no wonder then, that the remixes from deepchild and phonokemi manage to bring out further different facets of a already multifaceted track. while deepchild brings a dub element, phonokemi move the tune into darker musical territory. its brought back with noah preds folding cranes, which follows the thread through a musical universe infused with pounding and grinding percussion.

justin berkovi delivers 2 heads down mid-tempo techno dance tracks for his art debut. clean, crisp production with thunderous low end characterise both tracks. the title track drive delivers its power via modulating synth stabs, whilst when i throw down commands the dancefloor with its demonic vocal. a classic label debut from one of technos most loved producers.

magic wire label head lone picks another smasher, aptly titled delirium tremens, from the elusive neon jung with a suitably precise re-edit from nathan fake on the b.side, fresh after his last remix for radiohead. delirium tremens takes on flavours of garage, soul and psychedelia and glues it all together with an armour plated, mutant electro backbone designed to make the dancefloor lose it for 4 minutes but still keeps the soul firmly intact. its another demonstration of neon jungs ability to take influences from many genres and join the dots to create something fresh, but with all the right reference points to make this accessible to everyone from your backpacking beat head to the hardcore club frequenters. the bass in the first drop of this track is just berserk – theres no other word for it. the b side sees nathan fake up the tempo but draw it out, making this perfect for the more patient crowd. it has nathans signature beat all over it – it rotates, swings and soars gloriously until it finally ends in a warm afterglow, complementing the original perfectly in its grower not a shower approach.
